Better World Gala during 81st Venice Film Festival.
On September 5th, 2024, the iconic Cipriani Hotel in Venice hosted the Better World Gala, a remarkable event combining cinematic excellence with philanthropy during the prestigious 81st Venice International Film Festival. Organized by the Paris-based nonprofit Better World Fund, the gala champions women’s empowerment and sustainable development, showcasing the transformative power of art and cinema.

The day started with an inspiring 11 a.m. masterclass featuring two cinematic legends, Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner. Acclaimed for their artistic achievements and dedication to humanitarian causes, this masterclass marks a significant moment in their careers. They explored themes of empowerment and sustainability, reflecting on their roles as advocates for social change. Kevin Costner, an Academy Award-winning actor, director, and producer, shared his unique perspective on storytelling as a medium for fostering equality and environmental awareness. Esteemed moderator Guila Clara Kessous, a UNESCO Artist for Peace, led the discussion with her vast expertise in social entrepreneurship.
The evening unfolded with a gala dinner and award ceremony set against the timeless elegance of the Cipriani Hotel. Highlights include a mesmerizing performance by opera singer Anna Sanachina, an awards presentation, and an exclusive auction to benefit the Fondazione Donà dalle Rose, an organization dedicated to culture, art, and philanthropy. In the auction, we found a friend brand Thalie Paris that donated sustainable handbags handcrafted in Italy.
The Better World Fund’s Mission.
Since its beginning in 2016, the Better World Fund has been a force for change, using the global stage of film festivals to amplify voices addressing urgent societal issues. Founder Manuel Collas de la Roche emphasizes the role of cinema as a tool for social consciousness, stating.
“Cinema is a vehicle for spreading messages and raising public awareness of the major issues facing our planet.”
Over the years, the fund has supported numerous humanitarian initiatives, from climate change advocacy to tackling global inequalities in food, health, and education. Events have featured luminaries such as Sharon Stone, Forest Whitaker, and now Kevin Costner, underscoring the organization’s far-reaching impact.

What sets the Better World Gala apart is its innovative format, combining inspiring discussions with tangible actions. This year’s focus on women’s empowerment highlights the pivotal role women play in shaping a sustainable future. Kevin Costner, known for portraying complex, inspiring characters, brings his unwavering commitment to equality and sustainability to the event. His reflections on the roles of women in history and filmmaking promise to inspire meaningful conversations. I also must add that after this gala I am even more in awe of Kevin as a world-class leader who supports all different humanitarian projects, but also is a kind and humble person.
